Dr. Michael A. Wooten Long Beach Chiropractor Back To School Tips
With summer fun winding down, it's time for families to start thinking about shopping for their back to school supplies. Our Long Beach chiropractor, Dr. Wooten says there is no better time than now for emphasizing chiropractic care. Not only is it important to come to see us for a tune-up, but to ensure your kids head off to the new school year with their posture in check. Dr. Wooten's backpack safety tips will ensure your child's posture is in tip top shape as they head off to school.
Alamitos Bay Chiropractic & Wellness Center's Backpack Safety Tips
1. Is it too heavy? Sounds obvious, but be sure your child is not over-packing and choose lightweight materials for the actual backpack. Consider choosing a backpack that has a middle weight belt as well.
2. Can they evenly distribute supplies? If books and school supplies are all stuck in one area, the strain to the shoulders or low back can create undo stress to the spine. Be sure to place heavier and larger books toward the back of the backpack.
3. How is the overall fit? Straps should be snug, cushioned and the length of your child's torso should be accounted for. If you look at your child from behind and all you see is a backpack and a few inches of legs, it is time to reassess. The top of your child's backpack should be below the C7 vertebral area or in line with it and the shoulders and should not hang too low. The belly button is considered the waistline.
4. Test it out. Turn your child to the side. If they lean over, adjust the straps until your child is standing with correct posture. And, be sure to ask them how it feels after the end of the first week.
