Healthy Ways to Stay Active Outdoors
Spring is in full bloom, and that means more opportunities to get your exercise outside. Skip the stuffy gym time and take your workout into the great outdoors. At Alamitos Bay Chiropractic & Wellness Center, we encourage all our patients to exercise regularly for a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, we see too many people in our office suffering from sports injuries, and most of them are due to overdoing workouts and not taking care while exercising. Follow these simple rules to avoid some of the worst workout injuries.
Avoid Sports Injury Problems With Stretching
Many of the worst sports injury problems happen to athletes at the beginning of the season. If you're not used to working out every day, your muscles and joints are more likely to become injured through simple exercise. Dr. Michael A. Wooten, our Long Beach chiropractor, recommends doing the right kind of stretching before and after a workout to get your body primed for exercise.
Before your workout, employ dynamic stretching movement to get your body into exercise mode. Dynamic stretches are those performed while your body is moving, activating the muscles you'll use during your workout. Some common dynamic stretching motions are high kicks, walking while lifting knee to chest and jump squats.
Static stretching, on the other hand, is used after your workout is finished. It's used in the first five to ten minutes while you're cooling down to avoid the risk of injuries. Try hamstring stretches, triceps stretches and lower back stretching.
Stay Hydrated
Whether it's team sports or solo jogging, every form of workout causes you to sweat. Keep your body hydrated to prevent dehydration and muscle cramps. Start with about 20 ounces of water two hours before exercise, an additional 8-ounce glass half an hour before you work out and at least another 8-ounce glass after you're done. If you've really exerted yourself or if you're working in extreme heat, drink additional water to make up for it.
