Get Off Your Asphalt! The Benefits of Trail Running

Get Off Your Asphalt!

Four good reasons to take your run off-road.

1/ Stronger Core.

Unlike straight-ahead road running, trail running trains you in sideto-side and rotational planes. Sidestepping obstacles recruits corestabilizing muscles in more complex ways.

2/ Athletic Butt.

Rocky, undulating trails can make your joints go wonky. To resist those forces, your glutes work hard to align your hips, knees, and ankles so you stay on the path.

3/ Killer Calves.

Trails tend to have steeper, more frequent hills. Running uphill puts you on the balls or your feet, with all the push power coming from your calf muscles. Result: They grow.

4/ Cut Lower Legs.

Tiblales are hard-lo· train muscles around your shins. Trail running fortifies them. They have to engage forcefully to ensure that you touch down with a level footstrike.

We may not have the off-trail hills that some other cities enjoy, but Long Beach does have a beach, a long one at that.  Running in the sand will do many of the same things that trail running will do for you.  And running the sand dunes is even better.   Better yet, head to Signal Hill for some stunning views while you train mild, moderate, and steep grades, all off-trail.  There is a large community of fitness buffs that train the hills in Signal Hill, so you’ll probably make some friends along the way.  Win-win!

Our Chiropractor in Long Beach, Dr. Michael A. Wooten, The Active Life Specialist, can examine you and help with any of these aspects of your health care.
